This is a blog about home canning—or "putting up" as one might say where I'm from—and it will cover jams and other fruit preserves, pickles and briny things, canned vegetables (above all tomatoes) and the complement of condiments that includes relishes, sauces, salsas and those related preparations that result when you chunk bits of seasonal produce and preserve them in a syrup either piquant or sweet.

Morning in the Canyon

Don't believe those who say that it's always sunny and 70 degrees in Los Angeles. Although the official start of winter is two weeks away, the first winter storm of the season blew through yesterday and dumped 1.1" of rain at Greenvalley. When I woke up this morning it was 34 degrees outside—as cold as I've seen it in my five years here. Twelve to 18 inches of snow fell on the high peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains, and the Mt. Baldy website reports that the slopes will open this afternoon. Which means we're at the start of my favorite season of all: ski season. Get ready!
