This is a blog about home canning—or "putting up" as one might say where I'm from—and it will cover jams and other fruit preserves, pickles and briny things, canned vegetables (above all tomatoes) and the complement of condiments that includes relishes, sauces, salsas and those related preparations that result when you chunk bits of seasonal produce and preserve them in a syrup either piquant or sweet.

Fall Canning Demo at Surfas

It's November and time to start thinking about the Thanksgiving table. Let's talk autumn preserves!

Bettina Birch of Bee Green Farm and I will be back at Surfas this Saturday, November 7, at 11:00 a.m. for an in-depth canning demonstration geared towards the fruits of the season and the spirit of the holidays.

Headlining this all-star line-up are new recipes for: FRESH PERSIMMON BUTTER (no canning required), SPICED APPLE-PERSIMMON CHUTNEY using Bettina's own Fuyu persimmons and Arkansas Black apples, and a dazzling new take on that festive staple: CRANBERRY JAM WITH ORANGE PEEL AND CANDIED GINGER.

The demo is FREE and open to the public—no reservations necessary. Best of all, an all-you-can-eat tasting will follow.

Experience rare treats from the Greenvalley cupboard! Imbibe the timeless wisdom of Bee Green Farms! Suitable for the whole family! All are welcome! Come one, come all! Don't miss this once-in-a-season opportunity! Step right up!

Well, your last canning demo at Surfas was what gave me the courage to start canning in the first place, so I will definitely be there on Saturday!

Awesome! I've been hoping to go to a canning demonstration ever since i missed Fallen Fruit's. Thank you so much for this! I love reading your blog. It inspired me to make jam of my own a few months ago!
